Foster Care Alumni of America
Connecting Today...Transforming Tomorrow

My name is Lura Harrison and I tell everyone I grew up in Sumner, Washington, but in all actuality, I've lived in three different states and in 11 different cities!

I went to school in Sumner and Tacoma, Washington, and Boise, Idaho. I received a Medical Secretary Associates Degree at Pierce College in Puyallup, Washington.

I'm currently working for a state agency in Seattle that issues bonds in support of economic development projects. I spend a lot of my free time with family and friends, camping, reading, philosophizing, and on Facebook! I really enjoy volunteering at advocacy days in Washington's capitol, Olympia, during legislative sessions. I participated in three at the beginning of 2009, 2010, and 2011 in support of legislation that would impact the lives of children in foster care.

I live in Lake Tapps, Washington with my three boys, a dog, and 4 cats!

I entered foster care at the age of 6, with my sisters who were 12 and 4. I spent a large portion of my time in foster care with the Casey Family Program. When I turned 18, I had an opportunity to leave foster care, and I did, simply because I could.

When I found out about the Foster Care Alumni Movement, and FCAA, I knew I had found something I belonged to. I have a burning desire to make the world a better place (outside of my family), and being involved with FCAA has given me that chance I always wanted to be involved in something I could personally relate to. Now I know so many Alumni who have made it their lifes work to make the Foster Care System better for our Brothers and Sisters in care, and I am so amazed and inspired by all the Alumni doing such incredible work. I finally feel like I belong to something that will change the world!

I was involved in putting together the 1st Washington Alumni Family Reunion in September 2008, and singlehandedly organized the 2nd Washington Alumni Family Reunion in May 2009. I took on the challenge of being FCAA's website editor in December 2009!

I also volunteer with the Mockingbird Society and Treehouse in Washington, and have done some work with the Pacific Northwest Alumni of Foster Care run by Delilah Bruskas.
